Well, our summer holidays are over and we are back busy at work getting ready for Lifeinstyle in Sydney...but didn't we have a fab summer. The Victorian weather was kind - not too many stinking hot days and not too many rainy days - just perfect! Here are some images of our summer days.

Christmas is just round the corner now and there are lots of fantastic shopping events leading up to the big day to inspire your gift buying - here are three quite different events that Leoni & Vonk are very excited to be involved in.

First off the rank is the Melbourne French Festival held in the beautiful grounds of Como House

On Sunday we will be at Federation Square at Markit - this designer market is even bigger this year with stalls in the Foyer, Atrium and BMW Edge.

The weekend after - in perfect time for Christmas shopping - is Melbourne's original POP UP retail event Magnolia Square at Malvern Town Hall now in it's 7th year!

October already - can you believe it and the supermarkets are already beginning to fill their shelves with Christmas ~~tat~~ sorry goodies not to mention the yearly emergence of the all sparkling, tinsel grabbing "Christmas Shops" in the Department Stores. Aghhhhh you may say but there is in fact only 79 days or 1907 hours or 114392 minutes (depending where you are in the world and when you are reading this of course!) until Christmas.

One of our favourite events where specially curated retailers pop up in St Kilda and Malvern Town Hall. Almost a Melbourne institution for style savvy shoppers Magnolia Square is a must for all those looking for something beautifully made and not always available in mainstream shops.

Melbourne French Festival

The beautiful Como House and grounds will again host Melbourne's annual French Festival.Showcasing gorgeous French and French inspired products and food, French entertainment and travel the Festival always has something to delight every member of the family. This year the fun will start on Friday 25 November and continue until Sunday 27 November

Markit Federation Square

The design market to be seen at the growing Markit at Fed Square is now in its second year and is getting better and better at every event. In the words of its founders Markit "invites you to meet the designers, talk with them about their products and buy something beautiful" Markit is on 27 November from 10am - 5pm.

We can hardly believe it is the first day of Spring already and we are looking forward to the warmer weather! All around us signs of Spring are emerging - blossom, flowers and even ducklings at the local park. Queensland Music Festival

We were asked again this year to design VIP gifts for the Queensland Music Festival which starts this week. We incorporated the Festival's logo into either a sterling silver keyring or sterling silver necklace - the end results looked amazing. From Downton Abbey to the "House of Art"

Being a Downton Abbey fan I was very excited to visit this great house this week - situated in the beautiful Hampshire countryside Highclere Castle (aka Downton Abbey) is still the family home to the Earl and Countess of Carnarvon. The house was also the home of the 5th Earl of Carnarvon who famously discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922.

The interior of Highclere Castle feels very much like a grand family home and those rooms used by the TV show are instantly recognizable - the drawing room, Lady Mary's bedroom and the bedroom in which the rather unlucky Turkish envoy briefly stayed in!

The house sits in beautiful gardens - the layout and appearance of the parkland has not changed much from the original Capability Brown design and contains many flower and plant species from around the world.

Petworth House in West Sussex is by contrast a much more formal building and was in it's day called the "House of Art". It is jam packed with Turners, Gainsboroughs, 2 beautiful William Blakes and many other stunning paintings and sculpture that the owners collected on their "Grand Tour" during the early 19th century.

Petworth also gives an amazing insight into the lives of "ordinary folk" and those that worked in the kitchens of the big house. The kitchens have also been restored to their former glory showing the vessels and tools of the chefs of the day

Anyone For Tennis!

Watching Wimbledon on the TV has always made me feel homesick for good old blighty. My trip home this year coincided with those 2 weeks in June and I was extremely lucky, thanks to some old friends Sophia and Andrew Castle to go to the great event. The All England Lawn Tennis Club looked magnificent - the sun was shining, the flowers were blooming and the tennis was great.

On the Saturday I watched Andrew play in the veterans doubles competition. His partner was the legendary Mansour Bahrami - the master of the amazing touch and trick shots - and boy could he play and that was with an injured arm.The ball was flying everywhere and in one hilarious point played out in slow motion there was no ball! The umpire didn't seem to mind - in face she was happy to join in the fun especially when the champagne arrived court side! Andrew and Mansour's opponents Aussies Pat Cash and Mark Woodforde were also great sports and went on to win the match and ultimately the competition.

The next day was the men's final Nadal vs Djokovic at Centre Court - what a treat. We were seated one row above the players boxes and the tension between both camps was intense - alternate sides jumping up and applauding as each hardly fought point was won. The gorgeous Nadal was my favourite and probably most of centre court (and I have it on good authority he is a great guy too) but no one could deny the brilliance of Djokovic on the day.

Before and after the match I was able to do a touch of "star spotting" in the VIP area - Rafael Nadal, Martina Navratilova, Pat Cash, Virginia Wade, Jeremy Bates and Boris Becker to name but a few. Sophia and I were also on the TV briefly and spotted by many friends throughout the world - very funny! A great weekend - cheers Andrew!

Di Battista initially studied at art school in Milan and then spent an addtional 2 years studying Photography in New York. The gorgeous Pippa Middleton and a recent episode of Project Runway (yes - our guilty pleasure!) got us thinking how important the bridesmaid dress is to the whole look of a wedding. Pippa almost stole the show but that could have been intentional to take the pressure off the lovely Kate - in any case they both looked amazing!

Sadly, as some of us may have experienced, this is not always the case. The following photos, even taking into account the change in fashion taste demonstrate that the bride does not always know best - what were they thinking?

PR and marketing has been on our mind recently and we have been having many a discussion on ways of promoting Leoni & Vonk. During one of these discussions a gorgeous 12 year old friend of mine suggested we make a poster! We are always happy to try out any suggestions and agreed that should the lovely Ella design a poster for us we would happily use it! Well true to her word within a day this gorgeous piece of marketing appeared in my in box.

We always have music blaring our loudly whilst we work away in our little studio - anything from a bit of 80's Wham and 90's and later Ministry of Sound Dance Anthems to a touch of Duffy and Paloma Faith. We do like to mix it up and have recently discovered this great young singer - songwriter from Perth, Georgi Kay and cannot stop playing her catchy, soulful indie tunes.

Whilst still in her teens, Georgi has already collaborated with some of Australia’s top musicians and studios and is fast becoming a popular and accomplished performer both locally and interstate.

Described as infectious Indie pop Georgi has already won a number of high profile national awards (including the prestigious WAM song of the year for 2010) and is fast gaining a following internationally. One of our favourites is Free, a collaboration with Perth band Stoopfresh. It seems we are in good company as the song is currently being used by Foxtel for one of their tv ads.

Face and body products from L'Occitane and the hair-care range from MOP organics are complemented by Mela Purdie clothing, Helen Kaminski hats, Bronte Bay Paris bags and Alan Myerson leathergoods.Candles and diffusers from Glasshouse, Sydney blend beautifully with Homebody's own range of soaps, of which there are seven divine frangrances to choose from.

The store has also recently imported Catherine Memmi Paris candles and fragrance making Homebody an exclusive stockist of the brand.

Thank you to all our lovely stockists both old and new who came to see us in Sydney last week. We had a very successful show meeting old friends and making lots of new ones!

We had our own little meeting place and had lots of fun with other exhibitors. Unfortunatley Maria had her phone and brand new glasses stolen (not good!) but our spirits were lifted by the very well acted crime scene reconstruction by Simon from Hamb and Nick from Printspace . A special award goes to Nick for his fantastic performance of a limping/twitching prime suspect.

A very special award for tactful comments goes to Maria for announcing rather loudly that a certain celebrity was in the building - without noticing that the celebrity was sitting opposite her. She claims that she did not recognise the lovely Olivia without her black shiny leggings and big hair!

Despite a mad rush to the airport and alot of angst as to whether our poster, display furniture would arrive safely.......all was good! Under ridiculously hot lights we got the furniture unpacked and constructed and the jewellery out on display.........phew! As 2010 draws to an end we have been refecting on what a great year it has been for Leoni & Vonk. Our brand has grown and grown and we are now stocked in almost 80 gorgeous stores Australia and New Zealand wide.The wonderful Lifeinstyle trade show both here in Melbourne and Sydney provides us with the opportunity to meet new retailers and catch up with existing stockists.

We have also been involved in a number of great shopping events throughout year both here in Melbourne and interstate. Magnolia Square is always our favourite - meeting our customers face to face at these events is the best way for us to get to know what you want! Magnolia Square is always a beautiful event to attend - the visual merchandising and display are always stunning and there is always great things to buy from an array of very talented people. We were lucky enough to be one of the winners of the visual merchandising award at St Kilda Town Hall recently - thank you!

Paris to Provence is another great event we became involved in in 2010. The last festival was held in the stunning grounds of Como House. The sun shone all day and was crowded with festival goers all wanting to grab a little bit of French culture and and food. Even the replay of the AFL Grand Final didn't keep the crowds away!

To end 2010 we have created (with the help of the very talented Paul from BoutiqueHQ) a new, very beautiful website and our online store is up and running and proving very popular. The stunning Grace has again been the most beautiful (and patient) model for the new website and for other photo shoots throughout the year. Thank you Grace!

Thank you to all for your continuing support and we look forward to another exciting year in 2011. We will be taking a well earned rest and the studio will be closed from 22 December until 10 January.

A beautiful few days in France

Last weekend's Paris to Provence French festival at Como House was blessed with bright blue skies and sun all day long- summer was well on its way. The Festival attracted thousands of visitors all eager to sample the wonderful tastes of France - cheese, baguettes, crosissants, macaroons and wine were plentiful along with some gorgeous French or French inspired products. The organsisation was as usual great and Como House and it's grounds looked absolutely stunning in the sunshine with the red, white and blue umbrellas shading the festival goers. All in all a fab time was had by all! Here are some of our favourite images and exhibitors.

The entertainment was great - mime artists, French choir and bands and Marie Antoinette!

Cornelius, from Maling Road in Canterbury had the most yummy cheese - I have it on good authority that they sold 80 kilos of cheese over the 2 days! Gigi a la maison, from South Melbourne specialise in authentic French enamelware (which is becoming increasingly difficult to find) along with other French vintage treasures. We are very happy to be involved in the Paris to Provence French Festival to be held in the grounds of the beautiful Como House on Friday 1 October and Saturday 2 October.

The festival will have 70 French stalls including jewellery, holidays, clothing, homewares and Shannon Bennett's Vue du monde. Entertainment includes roaming characters Marie Antoinette, Gendarme, Napoleon, 3 pce French musical trio, mime artists, French choir, Shannon Bennett live, animal nursery on Friday, Fashion parade, petanque, display cars from Peugeot and heaps of yummy French food...............

Pink Rubies

New Sterling Silver Pendants

We have some beautiful new sterling silver pendants for the new season including a sweet hot air balloon and continuing with our vintage watch story, some original clock hands cast in sterling silver. All will be revealed at the Melbourne Lifeinstyle Exhibition in August.

Great Discovery in Notting Hill

Recent renovation work at London's Notting Hill Gate tube station has uncovered a fantastic collection of original 1950's advertising posters. The posters are in non-public areas and date from c1956 - 1959. Situated in an old lift passageway the posters were hidden when the station's lifts were removed and replaced by escalators. What a find!
